Chris: The way in which these technologies work follow your ideas, they are there to enhance and fully degrade when needed so I believe they definitely are a viable solution for custom type. Granted, having a custom font won't make or break your design but it's a nice touch that'll be noticed by those that can view it and those who can't won't know any different.

In all honesty, I don't think any are a viable solution for current use unless the site owner/client demand a custom font, and then it would be only for headings. The restrictions are just too limiting. Flash and/or JavaScript shouldn't be a requirement for a visitor to get the full site experience. That said, both flash and JavaScript have their places, but IMO, they should be used to enhance a user's experience rather than complete a user's experience.

I have to agree with your conclusion that Sifr is the way to go at this point, just because it is the grand-daddy to the other solutions (excluding @font-face), and is the standard up to this point.
